3 wires between two DB9s, 22 AWG in the standard color order, the twisted pair drawn twisted. the configurator draws the same diagram for your own pin map and exports it as a PDF.

Pinout

the CAN DB9 pinout, CiA 303-1.

CAN in Automation's recommendation for a 9-pin D-sub. signals in brackets are optional; reserved pins stay unwired so they're free if a later spec uses them.

Questions

about the CAN bus DB9 cable.

can I order just one?
yes, there's no minimum quantity, but there is a $40 order minimum. one 12 in (305 mm) three-wire CAN cable comes to $24.56, so an order of just that is $40; add more and the minimum is covered. shipping is free (UPS 2-day). prices drop at 10 and 50 units.
why receptacles on both ends?
CiA 303-1 has the CAN device carry the plug (male pins), so the cable that plugs into it ends in receptacles (sockets). if your device has a receptacle instead, switch that end to a plug in the configurator and it reprices.
are termination resistors included?
no. a CAN bus is terminated at both ends of the bus cable, and the configurator has no resistor option, so terminate at the bus ends with your own terminator or the one built into your devices.
is it shielded?
no. it's UL1007 hook-up wire with CAN_H and CAN_L twisted together in the shop, not a shielded, impedance-rated CAN bus cable, so pin 5 (CAN_SHLD) isn't wired. if your network calls for rated bus cable, use it for the trunk.
what about CAN_V+ and the other pins?
pin 9 (CAN_V+) and pin 6 (GND) are optional in CiA 303-1; the "+ CAN_V+" row above carries them. pins 1, 4 and 8 are reserved and left unwired. any other pin map is a few clicks in the configurator.
how is it made?
each wire is tinned and soldered into its contact's solder cup with lead-free solder, then a hood goes over the joints, plastic or zinc, with 4-40 screws to lock it to the mating connector. every cable gets a continuity test.
what wire gauges and lengths?
20, 22, 24 AWG UL1007 hook-up wire, any length, 5–48 in (127–1219 mm). the prices above are at 22 AWG unless a row says otherwise.
how fast does it ship?
it's built and shipped in 10 business days, then goes out UPS 2-day.
